... much more than a park
History
The history of the now 210-hectare green space of Berlin goes back to the year 1527. The Tiergarten (zoo) was once the hunting ground of the Elector of Brandenburg. For this purpose, fences were erected and wildlife put in place, to ensure the animals could not escape.
Frederick the Great was not fond of hunting and so he decided in 1833 to re-design the park to a public pleasure park modeled on the English garden.
During World War II, large parts of the park were destroyed. When the war was over, the vegetation could not recover, because Berlin residence took wood to survive the freezing cold. Finally in 1949 the planting started again, to get new vegetation within the centre of Berlin. Many German cities donated young trees to get back the beauty of the former pleasure park.
Much more than just a big green area
The tea house in the English garden is a real insider tip. After extensive renovation work the restaurant, which is led by Christof Blaesius, attracts with a unique offer. In addition to great food, you also get served cultural highlights. Enjoy the summer concert in the tea house with free admission.
Another highlight of the Tiergarten is of course the Victory Column, which rises far above the treetops. But that's not all. In and around the Tiergarten are for more attractions such as the memorial "German resistance", the Reichstag, the Chancellor's office and several embassies.
From the station Anhalter Bahnhof you can reach Tiergarten within 20 minutes.
