Berlin Waldbühne
was once called Dietrich-Eckart open air stage
The Berlin Waldbühne is located in Berlin-Westend in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf. During the summer months, numerous concerts of all kinds of music take place here. The construction started during the Olympic Games in 1936 under the supervision of the Berlin architect Werner Julius March with the designs of Heidenreich.
March also designed the Olympic stadium and other buildings on the Olympic area in Berlin, which also included the Waldbühne (stage). The total of the event area is 69.585m². The spectator stands can accommodate over 22.000 people and were integrated into the Murellenschlucht (valley), where the Pichelsberg mountain range runs out. The idea was modelled after the construction plans of the Greek Amphitheater. After World War II this site was given its present name. As an approved outdoor cinema it was in the 1950-ies a popular venue for the Berlinale.
The Rolling Stones and the change
The unique acoustics was valued from artists and visitors especially in the 1960-ies and numerous performances by musical groups were held there. The Rolling Stones concert should have a legendary place in history when on the 15th September 1965 a just 20-minute performance of this Rock band caused serious riots and devastation of the stage and the square. The property damage amounted to 400.000 marks. The repair was carried out seven years later.
In 1982, after the company "concert concept" took over, new events were held at the Berlin Waldbühne. At that time, the tent construction above the stage was mounted, which now allows events even in bad weather. Very popular is the concept "cinema at the Waldbühne". Films like "Blues Brothers" and "Rocky Horror Picture Show" can be enjoyed under the stars here.
