Park at "Gleisdreick"

From a train station to a leisure park

The old Anhalter Bahnhof was, before it got destroyed in World War II, a freight and post train station. Until 1912 the former suburban street tram tracks came together to a triangle shape (Dreieck). Hence the name of this park is a reminder of the former environment and use of the area: Gleisdreieck – track triangle. After an air raid of the Allies in 1945 the train station for passengers and goods came to an abrupt end and time stood still on this site, as there were no concrete ideas how to use it.

An "award winning" park for everybody

The Berlin people started a petition to transform the area around the Anhalter Bahnhof to a public park. With success! In 1997 the decision to establish a recreation area was made by the State of Berlin. The design of the park was dedicated by the wishes and ideas of the residents. The result was one of the most popular attractions for Berlin citizen and tourists. Since the opening, the Park am Gleisdreieck has won several awards, such as the joint project by Atelier Loidl and citizens of Berlin won the Berlin Architecture Award (2013), the German Town Construction Award (2014) and the German Landscape Architecture Prize (2015).
